Jolly Phonics and Jolly Grammar

Keithcot Farm Primary School is in the process of implementing the Jolly Phonics and Grammar program across the school (reception to year 7). Here is some general information about the program and resources you can start using at home.

What is Jolly Phonics: Jolly Phonics is a program that provides the foundation of skills and knowledge for reading and writing. It uses the synthetic phonics (to synthesise, to put together -blending sounds) method of teaching the letter sounds in a way that is fun and multi-sensory. Students learn how to use the letter sounds to read and write words. Each sound has an action and song.

What is Jolly Grammar? Jolly Grammar is the next stage, after a first year with Jolly Phonics. It is active and multi-sensory, with emphasis on consolidating the children’s knowledge from Jolly Phonics and helping them develop an understanding of how grammar works.

What is the Alphabetical Code chart? Alphabetic Code Chart is a core visual aid which lists the units of sound (42- ish phonemes plus some combined phonemes) down the left hand column with their corresponding spelling alternatives (graphemes) listed across the rows.
